One of the questions I get asked more and more is whether Nectar can be hired for a private event. The answer is yes, and the follow-up question is always the same: what kind of event are you imagining?
That question is where every event at Nectar begins, and it is the most important one we ask. Because the answer shapes everything that follows.
A Space Built to Adapt
When we designed Nectar, one of the things we were deliberate about from the very beginning was flexibility. The venue has multiple areas that can be configured differently depending on the size and style of the event. A standing reception feels completely different from a seated dinner. A cocktail-led evening with music has a different energy from a relaxed afternoon gathering with wine and sharing plates. The space can hold both, and a lot of versions in between.
What this means in practice is that there is no fixed formula for an event at Nectar. Every enquiry starts with a conversation, and every event is built from that conversation outward. The food, the drinks, the layout, the pacing, the music, the atmosphere. All of it is shaped around what you are trying to create rather than a pre-packaged format we apply to every booking.
That is, genuinely, what makes events here different from a room hire at a hotel or a private dining package at a larger venue. We are a small team who care deeply about the experience every person at Nectar has. That care does not stop at the door when a private event comes in. It is the whole point.
The space accommodates up to 60 guests at maximum capacity, with a more intimate seated capacity of around 43. For smaller groups, certain areas of the venue can be reserved while the rest of the bar continues to operate normally. For larger groups, full venue hire gives you the entire space.
Birthday Celebrations
Birthday celebrations are some of the evenings I enjoy most at Nectar.
The reason is the atmosphere they tend to create. There is something particular about a group of people who are there for someone they care about, gathered in a room that is warm and well-lit and full of food worth talking about. It produces a specific kind of energy that a formal restaurant booking rarely achieves.
$
Most birthday groups who come to Nectar choose a sharing plate format rather than individual plated courses. The sharing plate approach suits celebrations well because it keeps the table social. Dishes arrive across the evening, people reach in, conversation happens around the food rather than in the gaps between courses. It is less structured and more enjoyable for groups who want to celebrate rather than dine formally.
For drinks, birthday events often combine a cocktail welcome with wine across the meal and something more celebratory to close. We can build a bespoke drinks selection around your preferences and budget, or guide you through the menu on the night. Either works.
Whether you are planning for eight people or fifty, get in touch and we will shape the evening around you.
Corporate Events
Corporate events do not have to feel corporate. That is a principle we take seriously.
Some of the most successful corporate evenings at Nectar have been ones where the brief was essentially: get the team out of the office, feed them well, and make it feel like a proper evening rather than a work event with a different postcode. That is something we can deliver consistently, and the combination of genuinely good food and a cocktail menu that people actually want to explore tends to do a significant amount of the heavy lifting.
For corporate groups, the format options are broad. A standing reception with drinks and canapé-style dishes works well for larger teams who want to move around and mix. A seated sharing dinner works well for smaller teams who want a more structured evening with space for conversation. A hybrid, with drinks and light bites on arrival followed by a seated dinner, is often the most popular choice because it gives the event a natural rhythm and progression.
We can also accommodate private presentations, small product launches and client entertainment bookings. The venue is intimate enough that it never feels like a conference room, and characterful enough that it makes an impression on guests who have not been before.
For businesses on Broughton Street and in the surrounding New Town area, Nectar is an easy and distinctive choice for after-work events that require no long journey and no compromise on quality.
Cocktail Masterclasses
One of the most popular private event formats at Nectar is the cocktail masterclass, and it is easy to understand why.
A masterclass gives guests something to do rather than simply somewhere to be. Panos leads sessions that take groups through the craft behind the cocktail menu, from the infusion techniques behind the Tzatziki Martini to the clarification process behind Chemistry Lessons and the Lemon Cheesecake. The sessions are interactive, accessible and genuinely entertaining regardless of how much or how little guests already know about cocktails.
Masterclasses work particularly well for birthday groups who want something more memorable than a standard night out, for corporate teams who want a shared activity that generates conversation, and for smaller groups of friends who simply want to understand what goes into the drinks they love.
We also offer more in-depth cocktail development sessions for guests who want to explore specific flavour profiles, create a signature cocktail for their event, or understand the technical side of what happens behind the bar at Nectar in more detail. These sessions are tailored entirely to the group.
Wedding Receptions
Nectar is available for wedding receptions, and it is a format we are genuinely excited to develop further.
The venue has the intimacy, the warmth and the quality of food and drink that make a wedding reception feel personal rather than institutional. For couples who want something away from the traditional hotel ballroom, a reception at Nectar offers a genuinely different kind of evening. Mediterranean sharing plates across a long table, handcrafted cocktails, a room that feels like somewhere people actually want to spend time rather than a hired space that has been temporarily decorated for the occasion.
We are building out our wedding reception offering and would love to hear from couples who are in the early stages of planning. The conversation costs nothing and we have a lot of ideas. Get in touch directly at team@nectarbar.co.uk and let us know what you are imagining.
Baby Showers, Tastings and Afternoon Gatherings
Not every private event needs a late finish or a loud atmosphere.
We have hosted baby showers, wine tastings, book groups, and relaxed afternoon gatherings where the focus is simply good company in a comfortable setting. Sometimes a long table, a selection of sharing plates and a few bottles of wine chosen by the team is exactly the right answer to what an event needs to be.
For daytime and early evening bookings, the venue has a warmth and quietness that it does not always have later on Friday and Saturday nights. That version of Nectar, calm and unhurried and full of good food, suits intimate gatherings exceptionally well.
Seasonal and Themed Events
Throughout the year we host seasonal celebrations and themed evenings that go beyond the standard menu experience.
Valentine's Day, Mother's Day and New Year's Eve all bring their own character to the venue, and we invest in making each one feel distinct rather than simply decorating the room and calling it an event. We also work with guest chefs, host pop-up collaborations and create entertainment-focused evenings that give regular guests something new to experience.
If you are interested in hosting a themed private event, whether that is a Mediterranean-inspired dinner party, a cocktail tasting evening built around a specific spirit or flavour profile, or something else entirely, we are open to the conversation. Some of our best events have come from ideas we had never considered before someone asked.
How to Start Planning
The process of booking a private event at Nectar is straightforward.
Get in touch with us directly at team@nectarbar.co.uk or call us on 0131 558 9156. Tell us what you are imagining, how many people you are expecting, the kind of atmosphere you want to create, and any dates you have in mind. From there we will come back to you with options, a proposed format and pricing that is built around your specific event rather than a standard package.
There is no minimum spend threshold that makes an enquiry worth having. Small gatherings of eight to ten people are as welcome as full venue hires for fifty. Every event gets the same level of attention from the team because every event matters to the people it is for.
For any event on Broughton Street that needs good food, great cocktails and a room that feels genuinely welcoming, Nectar is the answer. We look forward to hearing from you.
Nectar is at 73 Broughton Street, Edinburgh EH1 3RJ. Open Tuesday to Thursday from 5pm until 11pm, Friday from 5pm until 1am, Saturday from noon until 1am, and Sunday from noon until 11pm. Monday closed.
