How to Read Our Cocktail Menu at Nectar

One of the most common questions we hear at the bar is simple enough: “What’s the best cocktail on the menu?”
The honest answer is that there isn’t one.
Every cocktail on our menu is designed to stand on its own. No drink is meant to compete with another, and none is intended to be better than the rest. Each cocktail is an individual contribution to the menu, created to express a specific taste, mood, or idea.
The real question is not which cocktail is best, but which one is best for you.

Taste First, Ingredients Second
When choosing a cocktail, most people naturally look for ingredients they recognise or already enjoy. That makes sense, but it is not always the most helpful approach, especially on our menu.
We regularly modify spirits through infusions, clarification, milk punches, and other techniques. Because of this, a cocktail may taste quite different from what you expect by reading the ingredients alone. Familiar components can behave in unfamiliar ways.
Instead, we recommend choosing based on taste direction rather than individual ingredients. Ask yourself whether you are in the mood for something fresh, rich, smoky, bitter, sweet, light, or bold. That mindset will usually lead you to a better choice.
The Three-Word Descriptions Matter
Every cocktail on our menu comes with a three-word description.
These words are not decorative. They are there to give insight into how the drink feels, not just what goes into it. They reflect our thinking when the cocktail was created and are often the most reliable guide when deciding what to order.
If you are unsure between two drinks, those three words will usually point you in the right direction far more clearly than the ingredient list.

Trust Your Preferences, Not the Pairing
While our cocktails are designed to work alongside food, we do not recommend ordering a drink you already know you will not enjoy, even if it is suggested as a pairing.
If you do not like bitter flavours, a cocktail such as Beach Bonfire is unlikely to change your mind. If overly sweet drinks are not for you, Lemon Cheesecake probably is not the right choice, regardless of how well it might sit with a dish.
A great pairing only works when you actually enjoy what is in the glass.
Let Us Help You Decide from the Cocktail Menu
One of our favourite parts of service at Nectar is helping guests choose their drink.
If you are unsure what to order, or if nothing immediately stands out, ask one of the team. We are always happy to talk you through the menu, explain how a cocktail is built, or suggest something based on a classic you already enjoy.
Whether you know exactly what you like or have no idea where to start, we will help you find a cocktail that feels right for you.
That is how the menu is meant to be used.
