Christmas in Edinburgh 2026: A Local's Guide to Markets, Lights, Concerts and Warm Places

Dates and details checked in October 2026. Christmas programmes change, so check the official pages linked below before you plan around a specific time.

I should be honest about something before you read any further. Last Christmas, we were working, and we were not really around to enjoy the city. I did not get to wander through the market with a mulled drink in my hand. So I am not going to pretend I have a favourite chestnut stall or a secret route through the lights.

What I can do is what I do for everything else on this blog. I have gone through the official listings and local press line by line, checked what is confirmed for 2026 and what is not, and put it in the order I would use if I had an afternoon off. Where I am not sure, I will say so.

Edinburgh Christmas Market

The dates that matter during Christmas in Edinburgh

  • 14 November 2026 to 3 January 2027: Edinburgh's Christmas, the official programme, including the market and the big rides.

  • 26 October 2026 to 10 January 2027: The Dome's Christmas decorations on George Street.

  • 19 November to 30 December: Christmas at the Botanics.

  • 29 December to 1 January: Edinburgh's Hogmanay.

  • 25 December: the market and many other venues are closed.

The Christmas Market and the big attractions

The centrepiece is the Traditional Christmas Market in East Princes Street Gardens. In 2026 it opens on 14 November and runs to 3 January, from 10am to 10pm, with entry free and around 70 stalls. It is closed on Christmas Day. I cannot tell you whether it opens on Boxing Day, because the official page does not say, so check before you go.

Next to it, the LNER Big Wheel and the Around the World Star Flyer open on the same day and run to 3 January. Both are ticketed, with timed slots, so book ahead if you have a specific evening in mind. The wheel gives you a view of the castle and the Old Town with the lights on, which is the best reason to go up.

In West Princes Street Gardens, Santa's Stories runs from 20 November to 24 December, with sessions from 3pm. It is aimed at families, it is ticketed, and booking in advance is sensible. The last show, on 24 December, is a relaxed performance.

If you want something with a bit more bite, the Polar Ice Bar on George Street runs from 19 November to 2 January in 30 minute sessions, with a new Viking theme this year. It is for over 18s. Next to it the Coorie Inn is free to enter. And La Clique Noël, a cabaret in a Spiegeltent at Bristo Square, runs from about 20 November into the new year. Reports differ on whether it ends on 2 or 3 January, so check before you book.

Two things I could not confirm for 2026: the date the city switches its Christmas lights on, and whether the tree on the Mound is lit on a particular evening. In 2025 it was in mid November. Look at the official site nearer the time.

The official programme lives at edwinterfest.com.

Where to see Christmas lights and decorations

The Dome, George Street. If I had to pick one place in Edinburgh for Christmas decorations, it would be The Dome. The 2026 festive display runs from 26 October to 10 January, and it has become a destination in its own right. The Scotsman reported last year that it includes a tunnel leading to a large Christmas tree and more than half a million lights. It is closed on Christmas Day. The Dome tells guests that tables in the festive season go fast, and it does not take bar bookings in that period, so plan ahead and do not assume you can walk in.

Christmas at the Botanics. The Royal Botanic Garden Edinburgh's illuminated trail runs in the evenings from 19 November to 30 December 2026, with timed entry and tickets. This year adds a glowing light sphere. It is a long walk in the cold, in the best way, and you should dress warmly.

Christmas at Dynamic Earth. From 5 to 30 December, with Santa's Grotto from 5 to 23 December and planetarium film nights. It is a family option and a good wet weather plan.

Candlelight concerts on the Royal Mile and beyond

I am a sucker for a candlelit room, and Edinburgh has some of the best settings for it.

St Giles' Cathedral on the Royal Mile hosts Candlelight concerts through the Fever series. For Christmas 2026, Chopin by Candlelight at Christmas is on Saturday 28 November at 6.15pm. A Moonlight Sonata at Christmas concert is listed for Friday 11 December, though I could only find that date inferred from the winter programme, so check the booking page. St Mary's Episcopal Cathedral on Palmerston Place has Candlelight: Christmas Classics on Saturday 5 December at 6.30pm. The Hogmanay programme also lists a candlelit concert at St Giles' on 31 December.

I could not find 2026 dates for the carol services at St Giles'. They usually take place around Christmas Eve, but check the cathedral's own site before you rely on that. Whatever you book, go early. Churches are cold, and the best seats go first.

Theatre, panto and shows

The King's Theatre is staging The Adventures of Pinocchio as its panto, from 28 November to 17 January. The Royal Lyceum has A Christmas Carol from 28 November to 3 January. The Festival Theatre has Scottish Ballet's Cinders! from 11 to 24 December. And the Edinburgh Playhouse, a short walk from the top of Broughton Street, has Back to the Future The Musical from 2 December to 2 January. It does not run a panto, so if the children want a panto, the King's is your answer.

If you are going to the Playhouse, I have written a pre theatre dinner guide for the area.

Hogmanay: 29 December to 1 January

Hogmanay is Edinburgh at its loudest, and the official programme runs for four days.

  • 29 December, 6.30pm: the Torchlight Procession, from the Meadows through the Old Town. It is ticketed, and you should buy from the official sellers only.

  • 30 December, 6pm: the Night Afore Party in Princes Street Gardens, with The Fratellis.

  • 31 December, 8pm: the Street Party on Princes Street, ticketed and for ages 12 and over. Hogmanay in the Gardens, with Underworld, also starts at 8pm in West Princes Street Gardens, and it is ticketed and standing.

  • 1 January: free events including a First Footin' culture trail, Sprogmanay and a family ceilidh. The Loony Dook, a swim in the Forth at South Queensferry, is a separate listing on the same morning. Check its timings and how to register, because I could only find them marked as to be confirmed.

Two practical points. The street party sells out. And every ticketed Hogmanay event is date specific, so buy before you plan the rest of your night.

Warm places

December in Edinburgh is cold and dark. On the shortest day, 21 December, the sun rises at around 8.40am and sets at around twenty to four in the afternoon, so you will spend a lot of your time in the dark. The best answer is to know where to be warm.

Sheep Heid Inn, Duddingston. A village pub with an open fire that claims to date back to 1360. Edinburgh's tourism site and The Scotsman both single it out for its fire. It is a little out of the centre, which is part of the appeal.

Café Royal Circle Bar, West Register Street. A Victorian bar with stained glass, a marble floor and a circular counter. It is not a fireside place, but it is one of the most beautiful rooms in the city to have a drink in.

The Barony Bar, Broughton Street. Number 81 to 85, with a Victorian interior from 1898 to 1899, a carved wooden counter and tiled walls. It is Historic Environment Scotland listed. It has live music at weekends.

Afternoon tea. Prestonfield House has a festive afternoon tea from November, and The Dome's Georgian Tea Room runs one from 26 October to 10 January. Both are worth booking early.

Vivien, Broughton Street. A candlelit cocktail bar beneath Vinette, and a good last stop on a cold night.

And then there is us. Nectar, at 73 Broughton Street, goes through a transformation each December, and my mother flies in from Switzerland to decorate. I have written about what happens at Nectar at Christmas, including group bookings, which are already filling. For where to carry on afterwards, my Broughton Street guide lists what is open.

Christmas Day and Boxing Day

Christmas Day is quiet. The market is closed, The Dome is closed, and we are closed too. I could not find a verified list of what is open on Boxing Day, so please check before you plan around it, especially for rides and the ice bar.

A few practical tips

Book the ticketed things first. The wheel, Santa's Stories, Hogmanay events and candlelight concerts sell out, and dates are specific.

Dress for the dark. Sunset is before four in late December. Gloves are not a joke.

Eat before the market, not at it. The market is wonderful, but it is a snack route, not a dinner. If you want a proper evening, book a table first and go for the lights afterwards.

Check dates again. Everything here was correct when I wrote it. Programmes change, and the official sites will always be right.

If I have missed somewhere you love, tell me, and I will add it to this page.

When you want somewhere warm to end the night, book a table at Nectar Bar.

Tuesday to Thursday 5pm to 11pm Friday 5pm to 1am Saturday 12pm to 1am Sunday 5pm to 11pm Monday closed Christmas Day closed. Please check our website for the days around it.
